To be fair to the FT they aren't the first to have made this mistake and they fixed it pretty quickly. They also knew it was definitely a Miliband...

Call me a cynic but I reckon the same headline (and article) would have been used for David had he been leader rather than Ed. Just drop in at the right time, so the "David" article would appear earlier or later. Pre-existing agendas and "prepared" articles in the media, surely not?
